Director of Partnerships (Energy/Cleantech)

Oakland, California, United States Full-time Allows remote

WattTime, which is both a high-growth tech startup and an environmental nonprofit, is seeking a talented individual with experience in either negotiating complex B2B sales or energy consulting to lead our partnerships team. We're a subsidiary of the Rocky Mountain Institute.

Who We Are

When you use electricity, what actual power plant created that energy? A coal plant? A solar farm? Historically, there’s been no way to know. But WattTime's novel software stack can let a device detect and even change which power plants the grid dispatches to power it. We can add this feature to anything that consumes or stores energy and has an Internet connection (which is now billions of devices). This enables many environmental benefits, from instantly cutting carbon emissions to accelerating the growth of renewable energy.

We’re a tech startup and an environmental nonprofit, catalyzing a movement to make technology like this the new normal for Internet-connected devices worldwide. Our team is small (9 employees) yet surprisingly mighty (e.g. Microsoft and Enel leverage our technology).

The Opportunity

WattTime is seeking a Director of Partnerships who can apply your business development or consulting expertise to take our B2B work to the next level. Unlike most nonprofits, WattTime largely operates on earned revenue from selling mission-aligned products. Now, we're receiving more and more inbound interest from highly influential large corporations and governments. As the environmental and revenue size of these deals starts getting quite high, we're seeking someone who can up our game on structuring and closing smart deals in a wide variety of high-stakes contexts.

This is partly a sales role, but we aren't looking for an aggressive sales person. Instead, we want someone who can work with very influential organizations to find the deal that's honestly right for them. You don’t necessarily need to be a power grid or IoT expert, but you do need to be capable of leaping into a wide variety of complex situations, and learning on the fly. Your work would include:

  • Working with corporations and sometimes governments to understand their widely varying environmental, technical, and regulatory needs related to our software
  • Synthesizing those needs into coherent proposals with an eye to driving revenue, yet always putting our 501(c)3 mission first
  • Structuring and closing smart deals that fit the situation. Should we agree to exclusivity? Cobranding? Should we scale our fee per device, or per kilowatt-hour?
  • Becoming a trusted advisor to our partners – helping them to identify and execute their own strategic vision to best leverage WattTime’s unique services
  • Evangelizing WattTime’s mission and novel capabilties in sometimes high-stakes environments

  • 5+ years of demonstrated success in negotiating and closing corporate partnerships OR energy consulting projects
  • Strong analytical background, ideally in energy
  • Strategic thinker, yet more focused on executing than endless strategizing
  • Clear, effective communicator – both verbal and written
  • Comfortable scoping proposals and structuring contracts
  • Genuinely care about making the world a better place

Bonus Points

  • Experience with revenue share or B2B2C agreements
  • Experience in an IoT-related industry, or corporate procurement
  • Technical knowledge of DR, real-time pricing, or other timing-related energy solutions
  • A graduate degree in energy or an MBA

What We Offer

  • A rare chance to make a serious difference by personally causing several of the largest potential environmental programs currently under discussion in the United States to go through
  • For the right candidate, a key leadership position at a high-growth startup
  • Strong opportunities for advancement within WattTime and the broader RMI network
  • $90,000-$100,000 + Benefits
  • Exceptional benefits package including medical, dental, vision, HSA, Flex accounts, disability, and more
  • Flexible work policies: unlimited vacation, work from home, etc.

Our Culture

We are idealists, yet practical. We have learned nothing has more potential for world-changing impact, faster than software. We trust data, not assumptions. We are a lean startup and embrace rapid prototyping. But we are fiercely committed to our mission, and never confuse mere growth with true impact. We punch above our weight by leveraging a truly unique network of allies, volunteers, and partners. We're a relatively flat organization, and everyone’s voice matters. We consider respect non-negotiable; there are no jerks here.

We also feel it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in the tech industry and that needs to change. We hope to help contribute to that change. Working with talented individuals from all walks of life has repeatedly been crucial to our ability to solve tough problems and achieve real-world impact. We aim to keep building an organization whose culture relies on inclusion to get the job done. WattTime is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE) and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability or genetic information.
